Has my milk gone sour??

*sigh*  I thought we were doing so well with the breastfeeding - really getting the hang of latching on quickly and staying on for most of the feed.  But the last 24hrs have been much harder work... lots of tears (Cooper, not me) and real trouble getting him on.  He seems quite distressed about something.

I wait until he asks for food mostly, and feeds have been well-spaced, so I'm sure he's hungry.  I've been careful to hold him the way we've had most success in the past and tried to make sure he's comfy/warm/not too hot/etc.  There's no poo in his pants.  I don't think I've eaten anything odd.  There is definitely milk supply, as the initial suck followed by crying makes it drip out all over his face when he pulls away.

So what is it?  Has my milk gone sour?  Is he getting bored with this flavour?  Maybe strawberry or chocolate milk would be preferrable?

I guess they say to give it 6 weeks to get the hang of breastfeeding and we've had just under 2.  I'm sure we'll have patches of both good and poor feeding over the coming weeks.

  1. If only we could read minds. Tom did the same thing to me and it was frustrating and you feel really useless. It was worse when my hormone levels changed - which was a fun combination - I was crying because it was that time of the month and Tom was crying because he was hungry and didn't like the taste.

Would like to say it gets better as they get older but Tom still refuses to eat some times. This week he decided that he didn't want to eat his weetbix (which he does every morning), but he'd eat two pieces of toast with vegimite. Low and behold, the next morning he didn't want toast he wanted weetbix again - he's only 16months old and has decided he's in charge of what he will and wont eat.

And the little darling refuses to eat his vegetables at Creche. The room supervisor took me aside last week and ask me if we fed him vegetable?! I said yes - every day - I think she thought he didn't eat them ever. hmmmmm I wonder what she did think I was feeding him all this time, McDonalds?

  2. You need kellymom.com
It's great for virtual support and you can usually find the answers to the questions you are embarrassed to ask real live people.
    Good luck!

  4. Byron hated it the whole 2 months that it lasted. He was so relieved to change to the bottle, and so was I! lol. Seems that stress is all part of the fun. I wonder how we'll go when our kids are teens?

  5. I was going to give you the Kellymom link just after C was born, I told you about it but didn't follow through, bad friend I am.

    True facts:
    babies don't make sense
They usually like the taste of vanilla
they usually like the taste of garlic

I would recommend a vanilla milkshake over a garlic one.

  6. Wendy, I did get to experience the both of us crying the other day... not fun! LOL to the veggies, though!! Kids are very creative in the ways they find to embarrass their parents!

Tab & Martina, I have started to have a look at the kellymom site... good stuff, thanks :)

Ruthie, the feeding fussiness is much better atm. Feeding very regularly the last couple days, but fussy between with wind. :( Poor bubby. Wants cuddles ALL the time. Slept on my chest most of the night last night.

Tammy, was it just Byron who disliked the breastfeeding, or did the other 2 follow suit?
